ABOUT LJOVA: Born of Alexander Zhurbin and Irina Ginzburg, Lev was raised in Moscow, Russia, until the age of eleven. His parents are both esteemed Russian artists; his father a distinguished composer of musical works in various styles (film, theatre, symphony, opera, rock), and his mother a poet and writer, who has also translated a large body of classical German literature into Russian. It is from this heritage that Lev began his own musical endeavors. Commencing his study of music in 1982 with the violin, Lev immersed himself early in the synchronous and ordered inspiration of classical music. After more than eight years of violin instruction in Russia, Lev and his family left the Soviet Union for the United States and New York City. Upon arriving in America, Lev continued his violin education and later began work with the viola at the Manhattan School of Music's Preparatory Division under the guidance of Emanuel Vardi and Karen Ritscher. During this time, Lev's father introduced him to the fine art of musical composition. Using the foundation of his father's instruction, Lev composed several award winning works that earned him industry accolades in both 1995 and 1996. In these same years, Lev began a university career at the famous Juilliard School, learning from such men as Samuel Rhodes (violist of the Juilliard String Quartet) and conductor Otto-Werner Mueller. During his years at Juilliard, Lev also joined the Wild Ginger Philharmonic, where musical creativity and freedom, as well as community living and working flourished. Ultimately, his experiences in the Philharmonic, as well as other sources, introduced Lev to the freedom that music can offer. In spring of 2000, Lev finished his studies at Juilliard and produced a performance consisting entirely of his own compositions.
Lev currently explores the creative potentials of musical integration, collaboration and improvised play. Throughout the year 2000, Lev has recorded a series of solo improvisations for the viola, which have been highly regarded. He has also contributed improvised viola tracks to songs ranging in genre from Easy Listening to World Fusion. Lev is high in demand as a freelance violist in New York, recording with such artists as the Electric Light Orchestra and performing with the Orchestra of St. Luke's.
Recently, Lev has completed a brief tour of California, where his music has been well received and has been contracted to compose music for short films. He is actively promoting his music via the Internet at MP3.com, where his music is enjoying great success.
Lev's music is moving, inspirational and above all exciting. He is sure to succeed on the Internet and in the greater music community.
